Annual Meeting: Time for a Check-Up

Shawntea Gordon, MBA, FACMPE is a nationally recognized healthcare leader known for transforming revenue cycle operations and advancing mission-driven medical practices. As chief executive officer of Atlas & Perpetua Healthcare, she blends innovation and strategy to help organizations achieve financial strength and operational clarity.  She holds an Executive MBA in Healthcare from Creighton University and is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPE). A respected author and educator, Taya has published multiple Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) titles on revenue cycle and strategy and hosts the RevDive Podcast, engaging healthcare leaders nationwide. She has taught revenue cycle management at Howard University and served on several national boards, including her current appointment on the MGMA Government Affairs Board and the Dignity in Healing Collective Board. Through her work, Taya continues to elevate healthcare delivery—balancing operational excellence with compassion and purpose.


Kem Tolliver, FACMPE, CPC, CMOM is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Medical Revenue Cycle Specialists (MRCS), LLC. She holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees in healthcare administration and organizational management, summa cum laude and magna cum laude respectively. For over 25 years, she has provided strategic and operational leadership to medical practices and hospitals. She is the co-host of RevDive Podcast, develops and delivers national revenue cycle, practice management and coding education, publications and certification programs for industry leaders including Howard University, University of the District of Columbia, MGMA, Health Care Leaders Association, Practice Management Institute and American Academy of Professional Coders.  With a reputation for innovation, Kem leads organizations in mapping technology with optimal workflows and she excels in identifying and capitalizing on revenue sources that improve care and mitigate risk

 


Learning Objectives:

Develop an understanding of best practice goals in revenue cycle management and their relevance to performance improvement. Evaluate quarterly task assignments and quadrant-based distribution, utilizing the unique skills and proficiencies of individual stakeholders. Construct a framework for developing an annual revenue cycle playbook tailored to the specific needs and objectives of the practice.

 


 

Charles Cole, ESQ  is a partner in the Chicago office of Lewis Brisbois and a member of the medical malpractice department. He spends the majority of his time defending physicians and other health care providers. After admission to the Illinois Bar in 1977, Mr. Cole has spent his career trying complex and significant matters to verdict in Illinois as well as other states, both in the state federal courts. Mr. Cole has tried more than 80 cases to verdict involving multi-million-dollar exposures. His practice areas and trial experience include medical malpractice, professional liability, complex construction matters, amusement claims, commercial litigation, transportation negligence, and general liability defense.

 

 

Learning Objectives:
Improve physicians' documentation to minimize their liability risks. Handling the risk of communications with patients on different electronic platforms. Recognizing when to "fire" a patient. Generate a standard or timeframe of when to refer a patient to a specialist.


 

Matthew Sakumoto, MD  is a virtualist primary care physician in San Francisco. He is a proud alumnus of tthe Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. His early informatics projects included supporting electronic health record (EHR) adoption at small practices through the Chicago Regional Extension Center and launching patient portals at safety net clinics in the Chicagoland area. He is also fellowship-trained in clinical informatics at the University of California San Francisco, with a focus on virtual care and clinician efficiency tools for the EHR. In his role as regional chief medical informatics officer and as a clinician-advisor to many early-stage health tech companies, he is passionate about exploring and implementing effective and evidence-based artificial intelligence into clinical workflows


Learning Objectives:

Evaluate legal/ethical/operational considerations when implementing AI tools. Analyze how AI tools impact efficiency, coding accuracy, and communication. Create an AI integration plan into an outpatient practice setting.
